The touch screen digital camera allows you to navigate settings and photos without having to navigate sophisticated menu’s with buttons and dials. You can crop image sizes and identify focus points easily as well as edit parts of a photo that would typically require editing software on your computer.
Touch screen panels are basically display overlys that have pressure-sensitive devices underneath that respond to your finger pressure. The panel on a touch screen digital camera is coated with an electricity conducive thin metallic layer and an addition resistive layer. A change in the electrical current takes place when your finger touches the screen and is sent to the camera’s processor. The processor naturally jumps into action and produces the selected action.
Digital cameras have been fairly slow at adopting the touch screen capability. Perhaps one of the main reasons is because bright sunlight causes touch screens to wash out easily. If you can’t see the primary menu system what attempting to work the camera, it becomes pretty difficult to navigate. Camcorders were able to find a workaround by having the LCD tilt and rotate. Tilting the screen eliminates the glare and allows you to see the menu. With digital cameras now including the video recording capability, natural progression seems to be leading to camcorders being replaced by the touch screen digital camera.
Having a touch screen digital camera brings about many advantages. The main advantage is probably the simplicity of switching between setting. The touch screen allows for one-touch selections for many of the common settings like the flash and landscape modes. The tap focus feature is another nice advantage to have which allows you to zoom in on a subject just by tapping the screen. Since the camera doesn’t have all of the extra buttons and dials, it tends to be lighter and more compact.
One of the main disadvantages of the touch screen digital camera is that it will naturally be harder on battery life. So you may burn batteries faster than you would with a standard digital camera. The price has come down since they were first released, but the touch screen digital camera is still a bit more pricey than the standard digital camera. Getting used to new technology may take quite awhile, photographers that have always used traditional cameras may not be inclined to use the touch screen digital camera.
Currently, some of the more popular touch screen digital cameras are the Nikon COOLPIX S60, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX520, Sony Cyber-shot T900, and Fuji FinePix Z300. The Nikon COOLPIX S60 is popular for the included stylus that allows you to write personal messages or add graphics to your pictures right on the camera.
